Philodendron melanochrysum—often called the Black Gold Philodendron—is a highly sought-after velvet-leaf philodendron, admired for its long, heart-shaped leaves with a luxurious velvety texture, deep green to nearly black coloration, and striking golden-green veining. New leaves often emerge with warm bronze or copper tones before darkening as they mature. As the plant climbs, its foliage can become impressively large and elongated, creating a dramatic tropical statement.
This variety thrives in bright, indirect light, which encourages healthy growth and helps maintain its rich coloration and velvety appearance. It prefers warm temperatures, higher humidity, and a chunky, well-draining aroid mix kept lightly moist but never soggy. Providing a moss pole or other climbing support encourages larger, more mature foliage.
- Light: Bright, indirect light (supports rich coloration and larger foliage)
- Water: Keep soil lightly moist; allow the top 1–2 inches to dry slightly between waterings
- Growth Habit: Climbing philodendron with large, elongated, velvety foliage
- Pet Note: Toxic if ingested by pets or children
With its luxurious velvet leaves, dramatic proportions, and signature golden veining, Philodendron melanochrysum is a collector’s favorite—perfect for adding rich texture, depth, and sophisticated tropical beauty to any indoor plant collection.
