Philodendron ‘McDowell’ is a highly sought-after crawling philodendron, admired for its large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves with prominent pale veining and rich emerald-green coloration. A hybrid of Philodendron gloriosum and Philodendron pastazanum, it combines the luxurious velvet texture and striking veins of gloriosum with the substantial foliage and vigorous growth of pastazanum. As it matures, the leaves can become impressively large, creating a lush and dramatic display.

This variety thrives in bright, indirect light, which encourages strong growth and helps maintain its rich foliage. It prefers a chunky, well-draining aroid mix and moderate watering—allowing the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Because ‘McDowell’ is a crawler rather than a climber, it performs best in a wide or rectangular planter that gives its horizontal rhizome plenty of room to grow.
